Symbiosis, the cooperation between two different organisms, is a key concept of life to adapt to the environment. Following this biological principle, the project ¡vamos, simbiosis! establishes forms of cross-disciplinary collaboration between science, art and society to explore and visualize ocean biodiversity and its importance for life on Earth.
As part of the project, a "Symbiosis Studio" was installed in 2022 in Águilas, a city on Spain's Mediterranean coast that is particularly affected by climate change. More than 45 participants, including international bioscientists, anthropologists, illustrators, actors, choreographers and students, cooperated with municipal employees, fishermen, diving instructors and cooks. Together they explored the city, the sea and its creatures, exchanged their knowledge about it and developed artistic formats of public communication and mediation.
Prof. Dr. Annika Guse is a cell biologist and professor for Quantitative Organismic Networks at the Faculty of Biology of the LMU. The focus of her research is the symbiosis of corals and algae. Together with the artist Stephanie Guse, she has created the interdisciplinary project ¡vamos, simbiosis!
Nature makes thousands of molecules– natural products– that have many applications. In fact, many are used as medicines. Plants in particular are an extremely important source of these molecules. The keynote will provide insights into the research of Prof. Dr. Sarah E. O'Connor and her research group, who are particularly investigating which plant genes are responsible for the biosynthesis of these molecules. The aim is to decipher the synthesis of the most complex natural substances and enable environmentally friendly production in larger quantities. Very often, important natural products are made by plants in very small quantities, or the natural plant producers are hard to grow. This means that it is hard to get enough natural product to use in the clinic. In the lecture, Prof. Dr. Sarah E. O'Connor will also show how her research uses genetic engineering to try to integrate the decoded genes responsible for the production of the natural products into the DNA of yeast or tobacco plants. Together with her research group, Prof. Dr. Sarah E. O'Connor is also investigating different chemical pathways of plant species that produce the same molecules in order to generate efficient pathways for important and useful natural compounds.
After the keynote, the audience will have the opportunity to ask questions to Prof. Dr. Sarah O'Connor.
Prof. Dr. Sarah O'Connor received her PhD in organic chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, USA, in 2001. After professorships at MIT and the University of East Anglia, England, and a group leadership at the John Innes Centre in Norwich, she became director at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jena, Germany, in 2019. She has also been an honorary professor at the University of Jena since 2022. Her work has been recognized with several awards: in 2018, among other things, she successfully obtained a large EU project (Advanced ERC Grant) on "Harnessing the molecules of medicinal plants". In 2019, she became a director at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jena, Germany. In 2023, Sarah O'Connor was also awarded the Leibniz Prize for her fundamental discoveries on plant natural product biosynthesis.

In order to enable inclusion and participation in everyday student life the Office for Disability Service offers a comprehensive range of counselling and support services for students with disabilities and chronic illnesses.
Support offer
This includes, for example, equipping students with impairment-specific aids such as hearing systems, laptops and visually impaired software, as well as sharing the use of the rest and service room in the stressful everyday university life. We also offer new students guided tours of the campus and support them in manoeuvring through the university buildings without barriers.
Counselling service
Students can obtain information and advice on the topics of study selection and admission, study organisation such as leave of absence and extension of study time, challenges in everyday study and compensation for disadvantages.
Peer groups
An exchange also takes place within so-called peer groups, in which students with similar impairments can support each other.
Inclusion tutors
The Counselling Centre also trains inclusion tutors, who work in closeThese tutors are in close contact with us, the faculties and the lecturers and thus serve both as a mouthpiece and a listening ear.

The counseling center informs and advises you on all questions regarding the compatibility of studies and family. This can be basic information about studying with a child, but also individual problems of study orientation, semester planning or questions about exam organization. If necessary, the counseling center also contacts the departmental study counseling or the examination office.
The University Women's Officer is the point of contact for matters of equality in studies, science, research and teaching at LMU. In accordance with the BayHIG, the women's representatives ensure that disadvantages for female academics and students are avoided and support the universities in implementing equality.
